(This was my Patreon track for November 2023; I'm sorry I forgot to share it with my Bandcamp subscribers two days ago. Next time I will. But you get this whole lovely collection with it. And now, the text I posted on Patreon:)

Let me be a little grumpy about music theory for a moment... I figured out at fix for “Wow! It’s in Mixolydian!” syndrome in which the only interesting thing about a track is that it’s in a slightly less common mode. I complain about this phenomenon but I don’t lose respect for artists who do it, because it’s SO ubiquitous, in fact many of my very favorite artists have done this and shan’t be named or shamed. (I know I’ve tried some things in my career that come off way more cliche than I would have wished, and I'd prefer we just not name me when talking about it hahah.) And I think it’s myself in particular that’s bothered by this phenomenon more than most people just because it’s one of my least favorite modes.

ANYWAY. I figured out a solution for that in the context of this song, “Lips Likes Sugar” by Echo and the Bunnymen, which on the original hangs out in B mixolydian for all three verses. I transposed it up 3 steps, so an exact transposition would be D mixolydian. The chorus and bridge bring in C major and D major chords, which can actually also work in the context of a melodic G minor. So I thought what if I work a bunch of Bb into ethereal cello parts during this verses? and I want the chorus to feel a bit like falling backward into warm water. Like, it mostly feels amazing sensorily, but also a little strange and terrifying.

So I hope you like this version. I believe in it. Original was in B mixolydian, this is in G melodic minor, more or less. The production on this feels huge and I’m really pleased with my current skills in that realm.
