about

4. Mr. Rat/ Modus Novus: poem by Sharon Berry, used by permission. Atonal melodies from the textbook Modus Novus (Lars Edlund), used without permission. [This was basically a way for me to cheat on the toughest atonal melody singing lab that was required for the music major – by harmonizing the atonal melodies to a chord progression (I composed, inspired by the very palatable posttonal "Das Buch der Hängenden Gärten" by Arnold Schoenberg, one of my favorite pieces ever) I was able to make them make sense to my ears, especially listening to the song over and over. The text was an experiment in working with spoken word. Funny story: the subject of Sharon's poem is someone I never met in person but both she and the boy I was obsessed with (“first gothic lover”) when I was 14-15 had had things for him in the 90s. I found him on facebook in 2011 talking to another friend of mine, but after I friended him he got amazingly stupid and whiny on a feminism thread and I had to unfriend him.]
