about

10. Winter's Air Slaps: Composed February-March 1999. My first major recording for a class. Please ignore hum and occasional bad timing and eq. Folksong "Silver Dagger" inspired by Joan Baez. "Bells” text by Anais Nin, from House of Incest, used without permission. (But I know she wouldn't mind.) [Do I really know Ms Nin wouldn't mind my violating copyright? I wouldn't be so presumptuous now. Anyway, this is a three-part, long dark and weird thing I did about being lonely and horribly disappointed in everyone. The really low & midrange bells are way-slowed-down recordings of small chimes. The low plaintive moans outlining a 6/4 minor triad are way slowed down “5 Notes From Astrid” which I'm including as a bonus track here. My later song “Fugue Fugue” (2009) also uses pitched-down and reversed bell/chime samples for a song with a similar theme (no hope of love/disavowal of marriage) but from a more experienced perspective and with a more traditional song structure.]

EDIT NOV 16 2013: I have just discovered this video of Anais Nin reading from House of Incest, and experimental visions by her husband, with soundtrack by Louis and Bebe Barron (pre Forbidden Planet!!)
