Waxing Gibbous

about

I wrote this song over a couple of years. When the first few fragments came to mind, I didn’t know who I was writing about. But as the lyrics came together, it became more and more clear.

A year and a half ago I found myself vacationing in New Orleans. A person I had dated on and off (at the time, off, as we’d lost momentum and I’d felt I was being appreciated mainly for my chillness) for years was also vacationing there. We ended up spending three nights together, getting dressed up and going out on the town. Six months later, after seeing each other occasionally back in the Bay, and while inebriated, they told me they loved me. I took it with a grain of salt, but also (myself also not sober) began to wonder why I had closed myself off emotionally till that point. Then, after the next morning, they ghosted on me completely!

It took me a while to put together my feelings on the subject. It’s fond memories, somewhat tainted by the fact that this person acted so appreciative of me, then just disappeared.

lyrics

The moon is waxing gibbous
And the night is young
Let’s hang a ladder on the stars
And kiss on every rung

As if the song is endless
Until it’s all been sung
The most delightful turn of phrase
Might end as it’s begun

Dresses and high heels
Burlesque and bourbon
And stumbling through the quarter
Tipsy and laughing and
Riding the streetcar and
Happy in your arms

I don’t ask you fall to your knees
And tell me you want me
Do as you please
Just tell me if you want me

I don’t need to hear
You tell you love me
Don’t disappear
Once you’ve told me you that love me

The moon is waxing gibbous etc

Had I forgotten
Once we were home again
You would forget me
Did I read too much
Into the intimacy
We shared when it was easy

The moon is waning gibbous
And the dawn is near
We climb down from the stars
And watch our silhouettes grow clear

And if the song is ending
The decent thing you know
Is say goodbye and tell me why
And let me let you go

And let me let you go ohh etc
