The Ones Who Walk Away

This is based on Ursula Le Guin’s short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.” There are lots of free pdfs floating around on the internet — go read it if you haven’t yet. (CN which is also a spoiler: pretty distressing depiction of a tortured child)

Often I read something that hits me really hard, and I want to write a song about it, and it’s a huge struggle to feel like I have anything interesting to say, and I don’t actually follow through. I managed to write a song this time! I don’t know if what I have to say is interesting, but the melody is catchy enough for me to want to share.

As with all original songs I share here, they’re demos that might change a bunch before they’re officially released. With “Bad Man” for example I had a fully orchestrated version with beats, but after playing it live with just the looping cello for a year, I ended up completely scrapping it and redoing it, faster and more cello-core, for War Stories. So this might turn into something totally different after doing it live.

I’m working on getting a kickstarter for Uncovered Volume 4-5 posted, hopefully in just a few days, and I am playing Worldcon this Sunday and DragonCon Labor Day (concourse shows Fri/Sat/Sun) so I am not sure whether or not I’ll be able to finish 2nd + 3rd tracks this month.

Bright-towered by the sea
Can you see the city now?
Horses and children in procession
Laughter and music fill the air
No king or knights, no guns or bombs
And no guilt, only joy

There are some who walk away alone
Into the unknown

If you accept this city, this bliss
That’s the end, don’t read any further
But if you’re one of those
Who thinks happiness dull or impossible
Then they torture a child for you
And because they torture that child
Some must walk away

I was one of them
I gave up security and sunlight
The comforting knowledge that
My child will never be sacrificed

I walked away to build something unimaginable
Into the unknown

There are some who walk away alone
Into the unknown
