Summertime Sadness

about

I had some doubts about releasing this — like most Lana Del Rey covers I do I have a hard time feeling that I bring anything worthwhile to a new version of it, mainly because I love her vocals and production so much. But here it is.

I’ve been falling back on making things very cello-based lately because I’m thinking about how listeners want a more consistent sound from me — something like my live shows which are 100% cello & vocals — whereas I want to be everything to myself, to make every sound I want to hear. I’m consciously toning that down right now, restricting my palette just a notch less than I did for Lemniscate (one of my most popular albums, it turns out). For this song it’s all cello and voice except for very subtle percussion — snaps on offbeats to match the bouncing cello make the bounces sound less like farts. The little sizzle-snare is my vocal with distortion.
