She Bop

from by Unwoman

This song is about masturbation. Did I know that when I was 6? Nope! But I'd like to think the message of liberation and self-love was appealing to me even then. I got into Cyndi Lauper through either the radio or MTV. In 1987 she was tied with Madonna as my favorite singer ever. I remember declaring I'd buy EVERYTHING either of them put out. So of course her first album (on cassette) followed closely behind True Colors. I remember watching her writhe around in a girdle and little else singing "She Bop" in some live MTV spot and my mom acting slightly shocked. I loved it!
