Is This Song About Vampires?

about

A few of you may remember the very rough demo I released of this about 6 years ago. I have finally recorded a real version of it, and added a bridge and everything.

Back around that time, I was performing livestream concerts pretty regularly (a thing I would like to do again, as soon as I have a chance to experiment with some platforms), and some fans started making me laugh by asking about each song, “Is this song about vampires?” because sometimes I played songs that WERE about vampires (Bloodletting, Cry Little Sister, Lovesong for a Vampire…) — so I decided to write a song on the subject. It’s the most novelty-genre-y song I’ve ever released.

This song is inspired by the long, long tradition of people writing vampire and other horror literature as a foil for sexuality too taboo to discuss. Since fear and arousal are closely linked sensations, it works out pretty well. I LOVED Anne Rice books as a teen, and have watched basically every vampire movie there is, and painted this kinda bad/kinda awesome lesbian vampire watercolor when I was 15.

lyrics

Strange creatures lurk in our town
Stronger than all mortal man
How are we to fight the undead
Who among us can?

Queer desires you mustn't speak of
An evil power you can't resist
Helpless against temptation
And powerless to conquer it

Chorus:
Is this song about vampires
Or is it about sex
Animal hunger and bloodlust
Are easier to accept

And pulse-quickening fear
Has nearly the same effect
As a forbidden love scene
A full-frontal vignette

How long have we been hiding
Our lust for unholy things
Behind a veil of darkness
Blame the devil for our sins

Or do we just need more and more
The mind to be teased as well
As our hungry bodies, writhing
On the way to a happy hell

Give me just a little death
Is that too much to ask
To feel my heart race and my breath
Stop

Rpt chorus
