Oh, tear my juvenile, half-assedly self-destructive heart out! I loved Nine Inch Nails for the aggressive sound and catchy subversion, but this was the song that really pulled at my soul. I learned to play it on piano when I was 14 and in fact played it for the school talent show my freshman year. I thought I was so serious and so dramatic. I was probably simply adorable.

I played this live recently and people were singing along, because they'd all had similar experiences to mine -- of taking the song so seriously and realizing later that it was a little absurd. I made a conscious decision in the moment I realized what was going on -- I could ham it up, coming as close to a gothic hand-to-forehead gesture one can manage while bowing -- or actually go back to being 14, really feel it, really emote, actually be vulnerable because you know what? I still feel this way sometimes.
