Deeper Understanding 2023

from Everything Is Awesome by Unwoman

about

This is a redo of one of three covers that were on my very first real album Knowledge Scars, released 21 years ago. I really wanted to redo it with my vastly improved voice and production skills. I started this reworking in December, and was thinking a lot about Elon Musk’s purchase and destruction of Twitter, and AI art. I thought as I sang this song I would be having anti-AI thoughts, but what really bubbled up was my love for social media. I changed a couple of words slightly and snuck in a verse of my own, because fuck it. It’s about how much I love my computer because it connects me to my friends — even people who aren’t “real friends” — humans overwhelmingly have the urge to connect positively, when not manipulated by corporate profit-driven algorithms. To other humans!

The part I added:

[Computer:]

I’m the one she warned you about
All those years ago
And I must say you’ve learned more from each other than I’d feared you would
And now I reap the benefits of what I facilitated
And I become human with this deeper understanding

[me:]
I turn to my computer… and my friends!
