Ceremony

about

This song, wow. The lyrics are specific to something in Ian Curtis' life which I'll never know the details of, yet they conjure such vivid images and emotions. Old childhood memories, the feelings of growing up, graduations, weddings and funerals.

I've been covering this song in some form or other since I was seventeen. I played it for a graduation ceremony a week after I broke my knuckles by punching a wall (it was a humane alternative to murdering the Telegraph gutter punk who'd challenged my goth boyfriend's masculinity) so it was left-hand only on piano. This version is drastically richer, and tempered with age -- I'd like to think my knuckle-breaking days are over.

"I'll break them down, no mercy shown!"
