about

20. Knowledge Scars 1999: I wrote the first draft of “Knowledge Scars” in my class notebook the summer of 1997. I was in Cambridge, England for a summer school program and I was bored and restless in philosophy class (the teacher was one of these people who thought that in order to be an atheist you had to believe in God in order to refute him. Puke.) Early draft & revision are in the pdf. What's extremely significant about this performance, from August 1999, is that it's the first time I ever performed what later was dubbed “acacella,” up to that point I had played Knowledge Scars on piano.

lyrics

Such a lovely fall from grace
Such a pretty tearful face
Silence rules falsely empty hearts
In this fevered, cold embrace

Intuition's wrong, though dreams implore so strongly
Upon these wings of fire no other has desired so
Could my hope be killed within another sin, oh
I'd touch your soul again but pretense wears so thin, within

If only I could wait; if only I could have faith
In love -- in love -- like yesterday
Then along you come, so cool, emotionless
And I can only open my arms, close my eyes, and wait

Knowledge scars with twisted limbs
Always given, given in
Torn by vapid lust
Deny our broken trust.
(July 1997, revised November 1998)
